This vintage Hawaiian harness racing photograph from 1918 is a personal favorite. On the back of the 6"x4" image (click to enlarge) the original owner wrote the following caption:
"Honolulu. September 29, 1918. This is the only picture taken of the Pacing Races at Kapiolani Park (link to related eBay posts), it was very unfortunate that the camera failed to work for the operator in the succeeding races and several fine finishes were lost. 'Breta Dec' is on the outside, 'Denerva' in the center and 'Welcome Boy' on the inside next to the rail. Aloha Nui. Pearl Harbor, Hawaii."
Thankfully the "operator's" temperamental equipment worked long enough to capture this striking image. While the other races that day are lost to history, this photo finish has survived to thrill us again today, nearly a century after Breta Dec, Denerva, and Welcome Boy crossed the line at Kapiolani.
