Civil War Currency - Sutler's Paper Money

Sutler These are examples of Sutler's currency notes, which were issued by merchants during the Civil War. These notes could be used by soldiers to buy merchandise such as tobacco, stamps, paper, envelopes, etc., while stationed in camp between battles.

For more information on this type of ephemera, pick up a copy of Sutler's Paper Money, a book by Kenneth Keller.Paper

Civil War token collector, Alan Bleviss, provided the images used in this post. I recently conducted an interview with Alan about Civil War tokens and merchant currency and how this ephemera was used during the conflict.
