Lulu (a.k.a., Anne Weiland) is the proprietor of Lulu's Vintage and Shop Vintage Portland has lived in the Portland area for the majority of her life and had been attracted to vintage and collecting since an early age. She discusses vintage items, ephemera, and life as a blogger in the following interview.
ephemera: When did you become interested vintage items, especially ephemera?
Lulu: When I was a child I collected cat ephemera, toys, and decor. In my early teens, I started to collect fashion ephemera as well as postcards. My love for vintage ephemera really started to grow when I was in my late teens/early twenties and I discovered a collection of vintage travel posters at an estate sale in rural Northern California. I was enchanted by the bold graphics and quality of design that the posters had. My mid-late twenties is when I started collecting vintage postcards featuring turn of the century couples with kooky sayings, which are referred to as romance, couples, or lovers postcards.
ephemera: What have you discovered blogging about ephemera and other vintage collectibles?
Lulu: I have discovered that people from all over the world share a passion similar to mine for vintage ephemera, clothing, and accessories.
ephemera: What challenges or obstacles do you encounter blogging?
Lulu: Most challenges or obstacles that I encounter blogging arise out of the fact that I don't have a laptop. I work from home, so, sometimes I can feel a bit isolated from society because I am in front of the computer in my "office". It would be nice to have a laptop so I could work on posts at coffee shops or even in other parts of the house. Also, sometimes our internet connection can be slow and it can take a really long time for me to load images into my posts.
ephemera: What are some of your favorite posts?
Reflections On Vintage Fashion Magazines and Valentine Greetings on Lulu's Vintage. Vintage Playing Card Swap, Antique Turn of the Century "Lovers" Postcards, and Vintage Embroidered Postcards from the Portland Antique Expo on Shop Vintage Portland.
ephemera: What are your future plans for the blog? How do you see it evolving?
Lulu: I want to continue to try new and different post ideas for Lulu's Vintage Blog, grow my readership for Shop Vintage Portland, and start other city based vintage shopping and event blogs. I would also like to get some book ideas that I have published.
ephemera: Thank you, Lulu.
