eBay seller extraordinaire Stuart Lutz is offering a rare Julia Ward Howe photograph
signed "Julia Ward Howe Sept 30th 1910". Howe, an American reformer and author, Howe is best remembered for "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". She helped her husband edit an abolitionist newspaper and after the Civil War, she focused her energies on the suffragette movement and other women's issues.
The photograph of her portrait shows her seated on a chair. This was signed three weeks before her death, according to Lutz. The ink is darker at the start of the autograph and the verso has some mounting remnants. The American Book Prices Current shows only two Howe signed photographs selling at auction.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
