This Depression-era scrip, up for bid on eBay, was issued on May 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression.
The seller says, "It was issued of all places in Carmel-by-the-Sea, today one of the wealthiest communities in America. It's a reminder of how bad it can get unless we do something today and how bad it was back in 1933."
The seller continues, "The piece was used by someone who needed help and is stamped on the back by some of the companies that took Depression scrip. It was found in the attic of a house into which we moved in Carmel several years ago. At the time I thought how interesting. Now I think how terrible for the person who suffered through that period, and had to use it while living in the richest country on Earth."
