According to Game7.tv, the Vanderbilt Cup was the first major trophy awarded for auto racing in America. It was founded as an international event by William Vanderbilt II in 1904 and continued until 1916 being held in different locations and varied distances. The first race course was 30 miles long, held on the country roads of Nassau County, NY, with the start/finish line in Westbury. The race was won by George Heath with an average of 52.2 MPH, 1 min and 28 seconds ahead of second place finisher Albert Clement, Jr. Heath and Clement were the only two entrants out of 18 who completed all 10 laps of the course to finish the race.
