Up for bid on eBay is this original autograph in ink of Edwin Booth (1833-93), on small piece of paper.
Born near Belair, MD, Booth is considered to have been ‘one of the finest tragic actors in the history of the American stage’. According to the listing, he was a leading Shakespearean actor, famous in European capitals and in the US particularly for his portrayals of Hamlet, with appearances in California, Australia and in England, before establishing himself in New York City. He successfully founded and managed his own Booth’s Theatre in NYC, celebrated and advanced for it's time, and managed the Winter Garden Theatre there, the latter until his brother, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, when public protest in 1865 forced him to resign.
