James Bond 007 Beer Can

Up for bid on eBay is this James Bond's 007 Special Blend beer can from the National Brewing Company.

As a kid, beer can collecting was my entry point into the world of ephemeral things. So, indulge me while I feature this non-paper ephemera item.

The seller says, "This one of the rarest of all beer cans. Dating from the 1960's the cans were produced without a licence from Eon Productions, so were quickly withdrawn from sale. One of a set of seven, the can features a seductive Bond girl and London's Big Ben clock tower."

Bowling Game with 1980 Player Card Set Professional PBA

Up for bid on eBay is this Pro Bowling game by APBA Game Company.

The seller says, "This is a very realistic bowling simulation using stats from professional bowlers and a pair of dice, you can recreate some of the most famous matchups in PBA history. If you grew up watching the Professional Bowlers Tour on ABC, they a matchup of Earl Anthony against Mark Roth will or Marshall Holman against Guppy Troup and his bad fashion will bring a smile to your face. There are 48 PBA bowlers from the 1980 season included. The game gives very realistic results which is the norm for any APBA game. They are still making games today, but bowling is no longer in their product list."

For the record, Earl Anthony was by far my all-time favorite Pro Bowler. That man could roll.

Campbell’s Soup Advertising Button 1905

Up for bid on eBay is a Campbell’s Soup advertising button, dating from 1900-1905.

Here's what the seller has to say about this item:

The button pictures a can of Ox Tail soup, one of the five original flavors. Around the outer border are the slogans – “6 plates of soup - 10₵” and “’Just add hot water and serve.’” The can label is red and white, introduced around 1898, but the gold medallion from the 1900 Paris Exposition that is pictured on the label was introduced in the year of the Exposition (1900). That establishes an “earliest” date. The label also names the company as “Joseph Campbell Preserve Co.,” which was used until 1905, which helps establish a “latest” date. The company was incorporated in 1901 so, if “Inc.” would be added to the company name, this button/clip could date to the narrower 1900-1901 range. The button portion measures about 7/8” in diameter; full diameter with the paper clip is about 1.5”. The button retains its original backpaper from the Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, N.J., and is in overall very good condition, as seen in the photos.

Dennis Miller Digs Green Onions

On a recent episode of the Dennis Miller radio program, he was digging on Booker T's instrumental masterpiece "Green Onions." The producer of the show originally credited the band Canned Heat as being the artist, but Miller quickly corrected him. However, Miller couldn't put his finger on the title of the track.

Green Onions has been ingrained in my mind since 1978 when I stumbled upon a mail-order porno film catalog laying in the middle of my block in Niles (classy suburb of Chicago). Anyway, as I was thumbing through said catalog, perusing the film titles and descriptions, I noticed that the porno film producer had thoughtfully suggested musical accompaniment for each movie (I assume they were silent?). For one of the movies, the producer suggested Booker T's "Green Onions." Being only thirteen at the time, I had never heard the tune, but, being intrigued and a curious lad, I sought it out shortly thereafter. After hearing the song I thought, "Yeah, this track would be nice to hear as one watched a porno."

And, as Dennis aptly pointed out, it can stand alone on its own merits.

The porno movie producer must have been a huge Booker T fan, since Booker's classic "Time is Tight" was also recommended as an accompaniment to one of the films.

In honor of this lasting childhood memory, courtesy of the streets of Niles, I'm featuring this Booker T album up for bid on eBay. I'm saddened that I no longer have the 1978 porno film catalog to offer up; that would be a real treat.
