Up for bid on eBay is an original mixed medium preliminary pin-up painting illustration by Cardwell Higgins with advertising for Zip Cream Deodorant.
The seller explains, "The back of this board is dated 1938 and states that the image was used as a counter display. That writing is in the hand of Charles Martignette and this like the majority of Higgen's estate wound up with Charles, and was auctioned off after his death in 2008. Cardwell Higgins was a prolific and diverse American illustrator, he worked creating erotic pin-up girl covers for the spicy pulp magazines of the art deco era. He was commissioned for and created paperback book covers, sci-fi illustrations and a few pin-up calendar images. Higgins created logo's for American Airlines, and various railroad lines, he worked at The New York World's Fair of 1939 and was an illustrator for Paramount Films early in his career. The girl and pose here he liked so much a similar but tighter rendering appeared as the cover for High Heel Magazine in June 1939. This is assuredly a preliminary work but fun and colorful and shows the artists odd take on the pin-up girl - a whirl erotic pop art culture. From a previous Heritage Auction sale selling the estate of Charles Martignette -- painting is unsigned and matted behind glass in a period but not too exciting limed wood frame."
