This hard-to-find 1966 Asheville/Weaverville Speedway race program
is up for bid on eBay. (Where else, right?)
According to the listing, the Western North Carolina 500 was held on August 21, 1966. "This was a great speedway," says the seller. "Located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, it was the fastest half mile speedway until Bristol upped its banking to take over as the fastest."
Includes some great local Asheville-area ads and super car advertising.
In my ongoing quest to feature Asheville-centric ephemera, here's an Asheville Trolley transfer ticket being auctioned off on eBay.
I'd guess this is likely a turn-of-the-last-century item.

Today, there are trolley cars that give tourists historical tours of the area. As for the real-deal, mass-transit trolley, I would guess the system that used these tickets probably went bust sometime during the Great Depression. This is only educated conjecture on my part, however.
Up on eBay is a limited edition limited edition Naval Submarine Event Cover commemorating the 15th anniversary of the commissioning of the USS Asheville SSN-758.
The cover is postmarked USS ASHEVILLE SSN-757 15th Anniversary Station September 28, 2006, Norfolk, VA.
According to the seller, the limited edition cachet was done by USCS member Michael Hebert. Printed on the reverse of the cover is #4 of 5 made cachet added by MHCachets USCS 7913.
An Asheville Southern Railway stock certificate, dated 1912, is up for bid on eBay.
According to the listing the stock was issued to H. B. Spencer for one share. "Henry Spencer was President of the Southern Railway," says the seller, "and this must be a director's share."
Up for bid on eBay is a nice, early, high-grade Masonic Token, which was struck in nickel for 1 Penny by the Asheville Chapter (No. 25 R.A.M.).
According to the listing, the Asheville RAM was chartered in 1854. The reverse of the token, which was made in Potsdam, NY, shows the Masonic Emblems. The coin measures 31mm in diameter and grades in uncirculated condition.
There's a neat eBay auction for the 1944 Asheville Telephone Directory
published by the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. According to the listing, the directory covers Arden, Black Mountain Enka-Candler, Hazel Craggy, Leicester, Marshall, Mars Hill, Weaverville, and Canton. The classified section (yellow pages) is 116 pages long with lots of ads for Asheville businesses and services.
The seller says, "There is a lot of information here and many nice, nostalgic ads. The directory is great resource for local historians and genealogical researchers."
There's a fun eBay auction for Asheville-based Allison & Jarrett grocery store brochure. According to the listing, the brochure was made by the London Needle Co. Adv. Dept (New York) in 1906. The brochure still has a few, rusty needles left. It also includes a 1906 calendar.

The new Tingle's Cafe has recently opening in downtown Asheville offering the same menu as the original from which this plate, being sold on eBay, came.
The original Tingle's Cafe serving plate held a variety of yummy items for many years (it closed in the 1930s). Now, once again, Asheville is able to enjoy the beloved Tingle's menu with the opening of the new Tingle's.
I recently met one of the new Tingle's owners. She's famous for founding the magnificent Orange Peel rock club, among other accomplishments.
Although I haven't dined there yet, I hear the new place is receiving good notes, although one reviewer said the original had opened in 1914, when, one look at the serving plate will tell you it was 1918.

Published in 1898 by TH Lindsey, the back of the card, shown in this post, features an advertisement for the photographer. According to the listing, the photograph on the front is titled Connally's Ford (with the "Land of the Sky" on the bottom of the card).
As I've mentioned previously, if I had the money, I would amass an Asheville-centric ephemera collection—buying nearly every item I could get my hands on with an Asheville connection. Since that isn't possible, I instead feature Asheville items here whenever a specimen of interest comes up on eBay. Perhaps I'll someday win the lotto, or receive a grant from the City, and I can begin purchasing these items with the goal of opening a museum downtown—near Pack Square Park would be lovely, I imagine.
An eBay auction features a great, vintage drink recipe book
from Asheville, NC.
According to the listing, this wooden covered book, titled, Here's How was edited by W.C. Whitfield and illustrated by Tad Shell. It was published in Asheville, North Carolina, by The Three Mountaineers, Inc. The pages are filled with helpful hints, recipes and fantastic illustrations. It measures 6" x 9.5" and contains 77 pages plus extras for you to add some notes.
In 1941, I'll bet the Three Mountaineers would never have guessed that Asheville would be named Beer City USA in 2010.
